Who, or maybe what, influences who we actually are? Is it up to us to decide whom we want to be? Or, are we just victims of certain circumstances and is there nothing to do but accept our personality?

As for me, I think that we are those people who control our lives. There is a phase in the book “Girl in Translation” by Jean Kwok

“Most important, nobody can change who you are, except for you.”

Personally, I think that these words make sense.

There are always aspects of our life that cannot be changed, for instance, family, nationality, place and date of birth. We have no choice. However, our background is not the only thing that determines who we are. What is more, it tells nothing about our personality. I believe that 90% of our personality is our own development.

Every day we make a host of decisions, ranging from clothes that we choose to put on to a book that we read before turning in. If to be successful is our dream but we are too lazy to work harder that means only that we do not want to fulfill it. Besides, we decide every day to be grumpy or joyful, mean or generous, selfish or supportive. It is all the matter of taking responsibility for our life.

Unfortunately, we cannot deny the fact that there are circumstances that are beyond our control. Apparently, our possibilities are limited and we happen not to be able to change the situation but we can change our attitude. It is much easier to deal with a problem when we are level-headed than when we cannot cope with our emotions.

I think this phrase is also about inner motivation. Nobody can make us change against our will. If it happens that means we allow them to do that. It is another idea about responsibility for our personality. Unfortunately, it is also impossible to make a person improve his life unless he wants to do it.

So, our personal treats of character depend only on us. Now it is time to think who we really want to be and what should we do to achieve it.
